Longest Natural Rock Reef in North America
The reef at North Cape stretches approximately two kilometres offshore and is the longest natural rock reef in North America. The North Cape Lighthouse was built to warn sailors of this marine hazard which was the site of many early shipwrecks. The reef is one of the favourite attractions at North Cape – visitors can walk out onto the reef at low tide, exploring the tidal pools, watching the gulls and enjoying the seals relaxing in the sheltered waters. When the tides rise, watch for the “meeting of the waters” as the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait come crashing together.
